A Catholic Charities of Shreveport Program
Conveniently located on our campus, Gabriel's Closet serves low-income new moms, their infants and small children. The shop, run and staffed by volunteers, will help get these young women off to a good start by supplying many of the items that any new mom and her infant might need. Mothers will complete an application either here or at the shop, by phone, by fax or online. After the application is completed, the volunteer staff will review the most pressing needs and decide on the items the mom will receive. The shop has everything from furniture to gear, like pack and play, baby beds, high chairs, car seats, strollers, walkers and more, as well as a large selection of tenderly used or brand new clothing. We also offer diapers, ointments, bottles, pacifiers and more.
We've added maternity clothing in our effort to reach moms sooner and will have available classes in pre-natal and infant care, breast feeding, parenting and more taught by an OB nurse/teacher. Each recipient of items from Gabriel's Closet will be asked to return them when no longer needed and will be required to take a minimum of one class before she may receive any additional assistance.
Gabriel's Closet is a response to our Catholic teachings and principles with a goal of supporting and honoring new life, the mothers who come to us for help and in turn, the family as a whole. We hope that each young woman we help will carry the message of Christ's love for all life and that their lives can be changed by this assistance.
