A Catholic Charities of Shreveport Program
Conveniently located on our campus, Gabriel's Closet serves low-income new moms, their infants and small children. The shop, fully run and staffed by volunteers, helps get these young women off to a good start by supplying many of the items that any new mom and her infant might need. Mothers can complete an application either here at Catholic Charities or online. After the application is completed, the volunteer staff will review it with the mother and will explain the merit program by which they may earn points to use for shopping in Gabriel’s Closet. If there are emergency needs, for example; diapers and formula, we will be certain those needs are met.
The shop has everything from furniture to gear, like Pack n’ Plays (portable baby beds), high chairs, car seats, strollers, walkers and more, as well as a large selection of tenderly used or brand new clothing. We also offer diapers, ointments, bottles, pacifiers and more. We have maternity clothing as well in our effort to serve and support these young women sooner.
We also have classes in pre-natal and infant care, breast feeding, parenting and more taught by a registered nurse. Our desire is to help each mother safely care for her little ones. We also ask that each recipient of items from Gabriel's Closet return them when no longer needed – another way she can earn points to “shop” in the closet.
Gabriel's Closet is a response to our Catholic teachings and principles with a goal of supporting and honoring new life, the mothers who come to us for help and in turn, the family as a whole. We hope that each young woman we help will carry the message of Christ's love for all life and that their lives can be changed by this assistance.
